Enjoying the Picnic Ride Sapporo

So that everyone can enjoy the Picnic Ride, it's essential that every participant observe basic rules and etiquette.

Conditions for applying to participate in tours

To participate in a tour, you must meet all the following conditions. Please review them before you apply.

  • I use a bicycle in daily life and I can definitely ride.
  • I can ride safely and stably without wobbling.
  • I can brake without issue. I can ride, stop and turn easily, all without thinking.
  • I have the riding skills and physical strength necessary to ride over 10 km.
  • I do not suffer from any chronic symptoms or diseases that might hinder safe cycling.

Notes when applying

  • A cycle tour guide will travel with you.
  • The fee includes the guide fee, the bike and helmet rental fee, and the accident insurance premium.
  • The fee doesn't include admission fees or expenses for food, drink or public transport (for tours that include a train or bus ride). Please pay for these out of your own pocket.
  • You're requested to pay the tour fee on the day of the tour, before the tour starts.
  • Cancellations made less than two days before the tour will incur a cancellation fee.
  • Your application may not be accepted since applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Those who have no cycling experience or who haven’t cycled in many years won’t be accepted.
  • Your riding skills will be verified before the tour. Your tour could be canceled for safety reasons if you end up being unable to cycle.
  • Tours can be canceled for bad weather or other reasons. Thank you for your understanding.
  • You must apply at least 1 week before the day of your desired tour.
  • The tour fee is to be paid on the day of the tour in cash.
  • Note: Details for the Porocle tour and the Velo Taxi tour are different from those above. Be sure to check the details when applying for those tours.

Cycling rules and etiquette

The rules and etiquette below must be followed during the Picnic Ride cycling tours.

  • Keep left on the road when cycling. In some places, you may be allowed to cycle on the sidewalk.
  • In the event that cycling on the sidewalk is unavoidable, slow down and yield to pedestrians.
  • To ensure safe riding, stop at stop signals and otherwise obey traffic signals.
  • Follow instructions given by the tour guide.
  • Wear a helmet while cycling.
  • On the Velo Taxi Tour, the riding rules shall be the same as those for the Velo Taxi.

What to wear and bring on your picnic ride

Wear sportswear, casual clothes or other comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting splashed or a bit dirty. Wear sneakers or other sports shoes.

Seasonal clothes

Cycling in spring can be cold, so we advise you to bring along an extra parka or vest.

Protect your skin from UV rays by wearing long-sleeved clothes, leggings or breathable tights.

When the sun begins to set in autumn, the temperature can drop very quickly. A fleece jacket or a sweater that you can put on or take off with changes in the air temperature is desirable.

Any of the following are fine for bottoms: trousers, jeans, shorts, a skirt plus tights, leggings.

Bring the following items if necessary.

  • A hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Gloves
  • Note: The rental includes a helmet. Or bring your own helmet if you prefer.

What to bring on your bike ride

  • A drink
  • Sunscreen 
  • A copy of your health insurance card
  • A purse
  • A towel
  • A jacket that you can put on or take off with changes in the air temperature
  • A backpack or sling bag for your belongings
  • Note: Please don't bring anything expensive.
